Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie has blamed the deficiencies in the education system on the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and the society.
Okojie, who is Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, a major cause of corruption and misconduct by students and staff of higher institutions is due to the NUC's negligence, The Nation reports.
“Yes, I am greatly worried and you don’t blame these children," he said.
"It’s the kind of society we built for them."
Okojie urged the NUC to be more patriotic in its activities.
He said the new Catholic Augustine University, which is to open for resumption in September, will champion the needed change in Nigeria's education sector.
“I can promise you that this institution is definitely going to be different," the cleric said.
"Otherwise, I won’t be bothering my head thinking about giving the nation a university."
