A woman was killed in an apparent murder-suicide as she left church services Sunday afternoon on the West Side, police said.
A 38-year-old man is suspected of fatally shooting the woman, 40, and then shooting himself to death about 2:05 p.m. in the 5700 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said.
Both were pronounced dead on the scene. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the man as Roshaun D. Wilson, of the 2200 block of South 20th Avenue in Broadview. The woman was identified as Trinyce L. Sanders-Wilson, of the same address in Broadview. Police gave the age of Sanders-Wilson as 36.
The woman's body lay on the ground, her feet showing from underneath the blanket that covered her. Next to her was a silver car with blood smeared on its backend, and a gun was on a sidewalk nearby.
About 30 people, several of them congregants, stood outside Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 5729 W. Chicago, and watched as the woman’s family sobbed while she was placed in an ambulance.
The church's pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Giles, said the shooting took place shortly after the church's morning service ended, about 1:30 p.m.
The woman who was killed attended the morning service and was just leaving when she was shot, Giles said.
The shooter, who Giles said is the victim's husband, met the woman on her way to her car, which was parked across the street from the church. Giles said he was told the shooter shot the woman and shot himself shortly afterward.
"I think they were probably estranged at this time. I think there was probably some things going on between the two of them," Giles said.
The families of both the shooter and the victim were members of the church for more than 20 years, Giles said. The victim was a member of the young adult choir, worked with children at the church and helped in the kitchen in the evenings, when food was served, he said.
"If you asked her and she had the time to do it, she would do it," Giles said.
"I know you always hear this about people when they are deceased, about how wonderful they were. But genuinely, she was a wonderful woman," he said. "It's a tragedy on both sides for the church. He was also a good guy. But you never know what's going on in the minds of people."
