Few days after an end to the 23 days run of two escaping prisoners from Clinton Correctional Facility, New York, was ended with the shooting and arrest of David Sweat, after his partner, Richard Matt was shot dead, Latest has revealed that another convicted murderer, another convicted murderer, Kristopher McNeil, had scaled a fence at the minimum security prison and escaped, with the help of a female prison worker he was sleeping with.
The prison break of Sweat and Matt was reportedly made possible with the help of with Joyce Mitchell who worked in the tailor shop.
Mitchell is suspected  of having sex with the men and has admitted to providing them supplies used in the escape.
While the drama in northern New York was playing out and splashed all over the news the past few days, another less high-profile escape occurred from a prison in North Carolina.
Like Matt and Sweat, McNeil was a murderer. He also had the help of a lady love on the inside, Kendra Lynette Miller, 33, who is a guard at the men’s facility.
Miller is reported to have been involved in a sexual relationship with McNeil and provided him with the aid in his escape.
She is now behind bars herself, charged with harboring a fugitive, aiding and abetting a fugitive, having sex with an inmate and providing a cell phone.

Her inmate lover, McNeil, is also back in prison after being found one day after his escape walking near a highway.

Sincere Advice 3 Simple principles for Muslims on social media

We need to move beyond whether social media is good or bad and start having frank discussions about how these networks are impacting our lives and relationships.

Social media has since taken the world and Nigeria in particular by storm. Social networking sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, are now used by 1 in 4 people worldwide.  Such activity may seem harmless, but the question now is how do we use social media in light of the Quran and the Sunnah?

The core of social networking is friendship. Whichever way you look at it, it boils down to how you interact with others. With that in mind, let's take a look at 3 simple principles that need to be incorporated into our utilization of social media and networking.

1. You Are What You Feed
It seems obvious, but sometimes we still need to connect the dots. The company we keep, is in reality who we follow. Our company is the updates we see on Facebook, the people we follow on Twitter, the photos we see on Instagram, and the people we text on WhatsApp.
You may be a fan of a particular celebrity and follow him, but what's your reaction if he posts a photo of himself having a party and getting high on alcohol? What about that “friend” (who you probably only actually met once or twice) who posts daily about how much they hate their parents? It's easy to be dismissive of these things and say you don't approve of it, but the reality is that you're constantly letting that messaging into your heart.
Don't believe me? Think about how many times you take out your phone in a day. When you wake up, on the way to school or work, during breaks, in meetings, at lunch, in line at the store, during commercial breaks on TV, using the restroom, when going to bed… how many status updates do you consume on a daily basis? It's one thing to have a friend or acquaintance that you see a few times a year and maintain a relationship, it's something completely different to see 5-10 messages from that person throughout the course of the day.
Consider your feed your personal space. Be ruthless about who you let in. If someone is a bad or negative influence, remove them at all costs. The sanctity and health of your heart is too great to risk over a few likes or retweets.

2. You're Judged by Your Closest Friend
A man is upon the religion of his friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends. [Tirmidhi, Hasan]
There's an obvious meaning here we all understand, but there are also certain aspects that are somewhat overlooked. The first is that this hadith is a profound insight into the human mind. First it shows that who we associate with affects our subconscious much more than some of us might like to admit. Second, it shows that a good friendship means knowing one another on a deep level. It means that when you're actually friends with someone, you know them on a level that you're comfortable with their value system, beliefs, ethics, and character.
One pitfall of social networking is the idea of hyper-connectivity. The abundance of superfluous connections sometimes gives the false impression of actual meaningful interactions.
We live in a society of social networks, with Twitter pages and Facebook, and that's fine, but we have contact with our work associates, our family, our friends, and it seems like half the time we are more preoccupied with our phone and other things going on instead of the actual relationships that we have right in front of us.
Usually your closest friends are people you have known for a long time. Strong friendships go through their own tests. What happens now is that when a friendship is tested, there's no longer an incentive to make an investment in that relationship. People can simply go over to Facebook and say, no loss, I have 600 more friends to talk to.
It doesn't take a huge leap of logic to see then why Facebook is listed more commonly as a cause of divorce. People thrive on this feeling of connectivity. They start to connect with exes who they otherwise wouldn't have talked to.  If they get frustrated with their spouse they go and find someone else to talk to because they don't know how to deal with a real relationship.
Change your focus from accumulating more friends and followers to cultivating the relationships with the close friends you do have. They're also a path to Jannah (paradise).

3. Be Moderate
Love the one whom you love to a certain degree (moderately), perhaps one day he will be someone for whom you have hatred, and hate the one for whom you have hatred to a certain degree (moderately), perhaps one day he will be one whom you love. [Tirmidhi]

Moderation is the name of the game. As overused as that term is, it's importance here cannot be overstated. There's the obvious meaning here, and that is to not over-share things with people you may later regret. This is something parents should focus on when teaching children how to use social media responsibly. Not everyone who is “your friend” is actually your friend or has your best interests at heart. On that note, high school and college-age youth should also lean heavily on their parents' life experience in this regard – they have dealt with lots of different types of people and will see the red flags with your acquaintances that you don't.
The real point to understand here is that social media is an envy amplifier. It's easy to look at someone's timeline and assume that everything is perfect for them. They have nice family photos, they post pictures from nice restaurants and vacations, and you're sitting there with all these problems and struggles. It's easy to develop hasad (envy) of people because of this. The same is true the other way around. Be careful of what you share because you may incite hasad in others.
It's also pertinent to mention here not to publicize one's own sins. In an effort to get people to like them, many will post pictures of themselves engaged in some type of shameful behavior. Don't uncover a sin that Allah has covered for you. By the same token, don't be so keen to gain acceptance with someone on their social network, that you willingly go along with them posting shameful things. Whether you hit the like button or not, you can at least remove them from your feed.
When it comes to disliking someone we also need moderation. One of the most destructive practices online is trolling and bullying. This type of behavior becomes extra contagious online for some reason. When people see someone going at someone they don't like, it's very easy to hide behind your keyboard and join in. If you don't like someone, don't harass them or say anything negative. Simply block them or unfollow them and move on.

It's my hope that our ummah starts more openly understanding that social media is running our lives in ways we don't often think about. Checking our phone is not just something we do to pass time, but it's even replacing the desktop computer as our primary device.  We need to move beyond whether social media is good or bad and start having frank discussions about how these networks are impacting our lives and relationships. We haven't even touched on things like information overload, or the drain of cognitive energy that prevents us from being able to do simple things like supplicating to Allah
Friendships shape us in more ways than we realize. We can no longer differentiate online and offline personas. Both have very real impacts on us and we need to be cognizant of the Islamic principles and how to live by them no matter how much the systems and environment around us change.

Personal development 7 awesome reminders that there are many people who love you

Although they may not shout it as much as you would want or even utter those words clearly, but they feel it very much in their hearts.

Smiling middle-aged woman

Sometimes you feel really lonely more like there's nobody out there you can say has your back, but you should always remember there are plenty people who love and appreciate your existence.
Although they may not shout it as much as you would want or even utter those words clearly, but they feel it very much in their hearts.
Holly Riordan of All Women Stalk lists a few quotes that quotes that'll remind you that you're loved:
  1. You've met the people you've needed: Even though you dream about becoming friends with a certain someone or dating a special someone, it might not happen. However, that doesn't mean that you aren't awesome enough to have them in your life. The people that surround you aren't always the people you want around, but they're the people you need around. The universe works in weird ways, so don't be too bitter over all of the pain the #people you know have caused you. They've helped shape you into the person you were meant to be.
  2. Staying in love is a choice: The next time you question why your boyfriend loves you, remember this #quote. He wasn't able to stop himself from falling for you, but he's in a #relationship with you by choice. If he didn't want to be with you, he wouldn't be, so there's no reason to question his #affection for you.
  3. You can't force affection: You shouldn't try too hard to get others to like you. You can't force anyone to fall in love with you or become your friend. It will just happen naturally. You're amazing enough to get #people to like you without even trying, so stop putting so much pressure on yourself.
  4. Certain people will always love you: Like the previous #quote stated, it's impossible to force someone into loving you. However, it's also impossible to force certain #people to stop loving you. They'll be there for you through it all, because they care so much about you. Even if you try to push them away, they're not going to budge.
  5. You are more amazing than you think: Even though you might hate yourself, there are people in this #world who love you. Knowing that such sweet people think fondly of you proves that you're wrong about yourself and you really are a good person. If you weren't, then those amazing #people wouldn't want to be around you as often as they are.
  6. You've caused so many smiles: Even if you've lost touch with your #best friend or were broken up with by your boyfriend, you should be comforted by the fact that you were once the reason behind their smile. Even if you don't currently make them happy, you once did, and that's an accomplishment all on its own. Be proud of it. It's only a matter of #time before someone else comes along who you'll make smile.
  7. Your friends can be considered family: You shouldn't feel bad about your life if you don't have a close knit family. Some people have parents and siblings who aren't worth their #time. However, it's okay, because you can create your own family. Your friends, the #people who are always there for you no matter what, should be considered your family. It doesn't matter if you're related by blood. All that matters is that they would do anything for you and love you unconditionally.

Ekweremadu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), was elected on June 9, 2015, when Senate President,Bukola Saraki defied the APC to contest and win after garnering most of his votes from PDP Senators.

The APC leader, who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity, said that Ekweremadu’s occupancy of the Deputy Senate President’s seat would cause problems for PresidentMuhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“As deputy senate leader, Ekweremadu is automatically the Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment. This is a sensitive position that, statutorily, should not be held by the minority,” the APC chieftain said.
“Ekweremadu and his PDP co-travellers will hamper the policies of the Buhari government. By the virtue of Senate rules, a member of the minority is not supposed to be the deputy senate leader; so, he is occupying the post illegally,” he added.
“We know the body language of some of these elements to anti-corruption. Nigerians know the stance of Buhari on corruption and insecurity. These elements occupying positions in the National Assembly must be removed. Otherwise, this administration is dead on arrival,” the source said.

The APC leader also stated that Buhari had refused to see Saraki since his emergence as Senate President.

About 14 million Nigerians are said to have already registered for their BVNs.

Meet 6 Key Actors In NASS Drama

The ruling party promised people-centric governance, but it has been hit by a gale of self-centered chaos. The nation witnessed a political tug of war between the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other interests within the party.
The recent implosion was as a result of two happenings: in the Senate, the emergence of Bukola Saraki as the Senate president with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Ike Ekweremandu returning as the deputy Senate president; and in the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara winning the Speakership in a fierce fight with the party’s choice Femi Gbajabiamila.
So who are the key actors in this drama?

1. APC Leadership

Per the party’s official statements, the ruling party needed its key actors in the saddle of the parliament to ensure that executive bills scale through without unnecessary back-and-forth in the Senate or the House of Representatives. Even with these explanations, the dominant narrative is that the APC was only seeking to play out the script of Tinubu.

2. Bukola Saraki

Bukola Saraki has been cast as over-ambitious, alluding to his supposed desire to become the president himself. The growing gulf in the Senate and the perception of him as a Brutus figure betraying party’s supremacy is the biggest hurdle he needs to cross.

3. Yakubu Dogara

Dogara’s triumph has been consistently compared to that of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal’s when he emerged against his then-party’s wishes at all cost. As such his ascension is seen as an affront by some and by others as the triumph of the parliament over a meddlesome party. For the new Speaker, a re-aligning of forces with the likes of Kano state representative and prominent politician Abdumuminu Jibrin, who may have been a candidate for the Speaker himself, if not for zoning restrictions. This calls to question what role the party should be when electing the heads of parliament and principal officers.

4. Atiku Abubakar

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has become the ubiquitous candidate for president and, from all indications, will have a go at the number one post in the country once more in 2019. He has, for now, aligned interests with Saraki.

5. Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, a self acclaimed convert to multi-party politics, is indeed behaving like the archetypal convert, remaining taciturn in upholding the mantra of the separation of powers. So far he has issued the odd congratulations to Saraki, Dogara, and all the principal officers. At the moment he is being goaded from all the angles to intervene, but he remains aloof to the situation, bidding his time and keeping the lawmakers guessing his next move.

6. What About Us, Nigerians?

The majority of us asked for change across all tiers of government, but so far, at the national assembly, it has been a state of chaos. Many Nigerians were not amused by the free-for-all-fight that occurred in the Lower Chamber. The visual of Saheed Akinade Fijabi with the shirt torn off his back was not one we thought we will be faced with this early.
In the staring contest of the APC and the leadership of the National Assembly, we still have to wait and see who will blink first.

Omojuwa, Ahmed Abubakar: Gas To Power Technology Is Effective

Editor’s note: Nigeria is not an oil, but rather a gas country, the Naij.com columnist Japheth Omojuwa and his co-author Ahmed Abubakar say. To ensure progress, the President Buhari-led administration must provide enabling environment to implement the gas to power technology and make the gas industry attractive for investors.
The views expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the editorial policy of Naij.com.
Story highlights:
— “In reality, Nigeria is more of a gas country than it is an oil country. We have far more gas reserves than oil”
— What are the options before Nigeria?
— “We need a viable commercial framework that would make investment in the industry attractive”

Industry experts have said that gas is able to get Nigeria out of its ‘power quagmire’. Nigeria has proved gas reserves of about 5.153 trillion cubic meters. It is one of the highest proven reserves in the world and the highest on the continent. In reality, Nigeria is more of a gas country than it is an oil country. We have far more gas reserves than oil. This clearly shows that the primary challenge Nigeria is to face around gas exploration and a gas-to-power agenda will not be about sourcing the raw material, but mostly about the enabling laws and the infrastructure.
Nigeria currently operates a subsidy regime for the downstream sector, which simply makes the industry an unattractive prospect for investors. No investor would fund an industry where the government dictates prices.
There is one fundamental reality that must change if Nigeria is to use its vast gas reserves to power homes and industries.  The market must open up by making sure to do away with the fuel subsidies, and full liberalization of the sector and the institution of global best practices on the operations of the sector introduced. When this is done, the road to power Nigeria through gas will start.
The challenges for gas exploration in Nigeria may be daunting but not insurmountable. Let us look at gas exploration itself. A layer of natural gas is sometimes encountered before crude oil is extracted from the ground. Most of this is currently flared, costingNigeria some $2.5 billion in wasted gas. At its natural state, gas is filled with impurities which can freeze, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and water amongst others, and need to be removed before the gas is eventually liquefied. The flared natural gas that is supposed to be processed and liquefied usually causes various kinds of environmental and health issues in the short to long terms. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is made when natural gas is kept frozen at -162 degrees Celsius.
LNG is typically made of methane gas with traces of ethane, nitrogen, and propane. When gas is liquefied, it holds a quantitative advantage: it would take about 600 ships to transport the contents of one LNG ship. LNG is quite safe and non-corrosive, and even when it spills, it simply evaporates into the air.
LNG is also the most environmentally-friendly fossil fuel because its CO2 emission is one of the lowest.
What are the options before Nigeria? Gas pipelines are not the way forward in the short or near-long term for certain reasons. Apart from cost-related issues, there is the security risk of running a long gas pipeline that could be vandalised in states it cuts across. Security is a pressing issue in Nigeria. However, the liquefied natural gas stored in tanks can be used to feed the gas power plants. The gas power plants can be used to generate electricity for targeted areas.
Pipelines can be replaced by cryogenic tankers to distribute LNG to the various storage tanks across the nation.
This system of LNG storage tanks and gas power plants can be used to boost energy supply in short-medium term. Once the market is guaranteed and insecurity dealt with to its barest minimum, we can look at laying gas pipelines, but in line with commercial interests. Pipelines should be built according to the dictates of the market and not according to political considerations.
The primary inhibition against this development is the absence of an enabling environment. It is always going to be difficult to attract investors into the industry if the government intends to be a player and a regulator. We have not really started to explore the possibility of using gas specifically to power the country. While we continue to suffer the consequences of a country that cannot power its industries, we do have the essential raw material to power Nigeria.
The process of opening up opportunities in gas exploration and gas-to-power projects will create numerous jobs, and you already know that, once Nigeria fixes its power challenge, our industries will produce more, employ and empower more people to participate in the economy. This policy could also help reduce gas flaring because energy companies would be able to sell the gas to processing companies.
Even after pipeline construction, the LNG storage tanks could be used for emergency situations and efficiency improvement.
We need a viable commercial framework that would make investment in the industry attractive. There are currently little or no incentives for private investors to put money into the industry.
President Buhari administration has its work cut out, but if it is brave enough to take certain decisions, Nigeria will win on many fronts: developing the gas sector, empowering private investors with new laws, opening up the investment space for gas-to-power generation. Expect new industrial parks, more export processing zones and an increase in manufacturing that would help power Nigeria’s renewed quest for true and sustainable industrialization.
