Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's second film together – nine years after their first will shoot on location in Malta, the island's leader has revealed.
Joseph Muscat, the Maltese prime minister, told Us Weekly that the couple had chosen the island of Gozo, which is part of Malta, after a scouting trip last month. It is understood that the film, which has been written by Jolie and will star both actors, is a romance. Pitt also filmed the zombie action epic World War Z in Malta in 2011.
"I'm happy that Hollywood producers have once again chosen Malta for their project, and we will be delighted to host Mr Pitt, Ms Jolie, and their family for the second time in just a few years," said Muscat. "I'm sure that this film will help put our beautiful sister island of Gozo on the world map."
Us Weekly reports that Pitt and Jolie will shoot in Mgarr ix-Xini Bay in Gozo. According to the magazine's sources, the couple and their six children will stay in Malta for eight weeks from the end of August.
Jolie, 39, previously described the new film as an "experimental, independent-type" film. She told the US entertainment TV show Extra in May: "It's not a big movie, it's not an action movie. It's the kind of movie we love but aren't often cast in. It's a very experimental, independent-type film where we get to be actors together and be really raw, open, try things."
It is not clear whether Jolie will direct the untitled project. The actor made her debut as a film-maker with the award-winning In the Land of Blood and Honey in 2011, and has also directed the second world war survival drama Unbroken, which opens at Christmas. Pitt's work as a producer on 12 Years a Slave won him a best picture Oscar earlier this year.
Mr and Mrs Smith, the couple's only previous film together, won lukewarm reviews in 2005, but made more than $500m (£296m) worldwide.
